The Darkening Image Of
“The Leader of the Free World”
In The Eyes Of The Rest Of The World:
One Step Forward, Two Steps Back
Clipped from an email conversation, September, 2005
One of the big problems, the way I see it, is that this country is used to not having to care what countries think of them. That's part of the culture -- they split from the UK and the rest of Europe and did it "their way". The country is becoming analogous to the a big technology corporation that thinks the way they do things is the best way possible, and doesn't realize how far behind the ball their actually falling; that the world outside their walls is loosing faith in them and positive impressions are diminishing.
Nobody likes a bully, and in the end, the bully always gets what's coming, e.g. 9/11. I just wonder how long it will take for the apparently blind masses to realize why things like 9/11 are happening in the "homeland"?
The irony is that citizens of "the leader of the free world" have more freedoms taken away each day than they realize. You have to pass a drug test to work at Walmart for Goth's sake! I guess that shouldn't be a big surprise, considering that Walmart forces record companies to create censored versions of CDs containing explicit lyrics or will refuse to carry said CDs. And, I haven't even started on gay marriage, equal rights for same-sex partners, abortion, stem cell research, or the localized embarrassments like the mayor of Charlotte publicly admitting that if it were up to him, he would have denied use of Marshal Park for Charlotte’s Gay Pride festival, but parties in his administration had warned him that would probably not be a good idea for his career.
For the current state of “Big Brothership”, it’s the dual wielded weapons of political leadership and news media that are blamed first. Instilling fear and paranoia, for example, through news headlines like “Identity Theft: It’s not a matter of if, but when!” (source: Fox News, if I recall correctly). However, one can’t really blame the media and political propaganda. After all, if the propaganda wasn’t so readily devoured by it’s audience, we wouldn’t have this problem, would we?
Anyway...happy thoughts...happy thoughts. The do have nice weather here!
