The Alternative Scene vs Organized Religion
From an email conversation, September of 2005
QUESTION: "Isn’t the [alternative scene] that you hang with all believing in the same things...the same as a group of religious believers who hang together [to share their beliefs]?? Hope I didn't open a flood gate!"
ANSWER: Not the same thing. We all have different beliefs. The only beliefs we share are that diversity and self-expression are good and should be embraced. If you want to show up to a "fetish event" in khakis and a golf shirt, then go right ahead. We won't make fun. Just remember it the next time you see some "freak" in leather, vinyl, and/or spiked jewelry walk into a "normal" bar and get the urge to make joking remarks to your friends, or worse, to them.
We also don't attempt to restrict the freedoms of others. That sort of falls back on what I said above, but on a larger scale. Christian organizations, for example, exert influence to restrict the freedoms of others, Christian or not. We simply create temporary environments where self-expression and freedom is embraced and invite others to join us of their own free will (with the hope that maybe the concept will rub off on a few of them).
If you want to be Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist, Muslim, whatever, then go ahead. Just don't expect everyone else to be it with you, and for Goth's sake! Stop telling the rest of us we're going to "hell" (whatever mythical place that might be). We don't believe you, and it makes you sound ignorant.
Feel free to argue by email, or in my guestbook. I might even respond to you.
